Welcome! This was my first post.… Over a year ago. And in honor of SAFS first birthday I decided to rework and repost, I've been sewing for over 12 years, and I finally decided that I need to chronicle, compile, archive. So here we go back into familiar territory.

Are you tired of the same old party dresses? Want to make a bold statement with your fashion choices? Look no further than this step-by-step guide on how to create a one-of-a-kind blazer dress using a McCalls dress pattern. With the right fabric, modifications, cutting, and sewing techniques, you'll be able to create a stunning blazer dress that will have heads turning at your next event. In this article, we'll take you through the entire process, from choosing the perfect fabric to adding those finishing touches. Get ready to impress with your sewing skills and fashion-forward style.,

Choosing the Right Fabric

When it comes to making a blazer dress with a McCalls dress pattern, choosing the right fabric is essential. The type of fabric you choose can make or break your creation. You'll want to choose a fabric that not only looks good but also drapes well and is easy to work with. I chose this hot pink African Batik border fabric. It’s a cotton blend so it’s light and airy with a good drape and the perfect amount of movement.

If you prefer a more structured look, feel free to opt for a fabric with a bit more heft like a denim, corduroy or even a heavier weight cotton. These fabrics will give your blazer dress a more crisp and tailored appearance. I might consider using up cycled denim in the future. I think that would be an incredible look.

When selecting color or pattern, go for something bold and unique. Think outside the box and consider bright colors, bold prints, or unique textures. Remember, the goal is to make a statement with your blazer dress.

In the next section, we'll discuss how to modify the McCalls dress pattern to create the perfect blazer dress.,

Modifying the McCalls Dress Pattern

To create the perfect blazer dress, it's important to modify the McCalls dress pattern to suit your needs. Depending on your personal style and preferences, you may want to adjust the length of the dress, the size of the lapels, or even add pockets for utility. Luckily this pattern is pretty easy to modify. I decided to modify it by splitting the sleeves up to the elbow.

Take some time to consider what modifications you want to make before you start cutting and sewing your fabric, to make sure you have enough fabric to make the desired changes. Once you have your modifications in mind, you'll be ready to move on to the next step: cutting and sewing the blazer dress.,

Cutting and Sewing the Blazer Dress

To bring your blazer dress to life, you'll need to cut and sew the fabric according to your modified McCalls pattern. Start by cutting out the fabric pieces, making sure to follow the pattern instructions carefully. Pay close attention to the direction of fabric grain and ensure that you have enough fabric to match your modifications. The pattern matching on this was easy because it’s a border design, so all I had to do was line up the bottom of each pattern piece with the bottom of the design.

Make sure to transfer notches and any pattern notations to your fabric. Once you have your pieces cut, it's time to start sewing. Begin by following the pattern instructions, making sure to sew each piece together accurately.

As you sew, make sure you try on the dress periodically to ensure it fits comfortably and matches your vision. If something isn't quite right, don't be afraid to adjust it as you go. Remember that every seam counts, so take your time and sew with care.

Adding Finishing Touches

As you finish sewing your blazer dress, it's time to start thinking about adding those extra touches that will make it stand out. One of the easiest ways to elevate a simple garment is through accessorizing. Consider adding a statement necklace or pair of earrings. These additions can bring a pop of color to your outfit, or add a touch of texture to the streamlined silhouette of the dress.

With these finishing touches added to your blazer dress, you're sure to turn heads and feel confident and stylish wherever you go.,

In summary, making a blazer dress with a McCalls dress pattern is a fantastic way to stand out at any event. By carefully choosing the right fabric, modifying the pattern, cutting, sewing, and adding finishing touches, you can create a stunning and unique dress that is both professional and fashion-forward. Remember to experiment with different fabrics and patterns to make it truly your own. Don't be afraid to try something new, and happy sewing! As Coco Chanel once said, "Dress shabbily, and they remember the dress; dress impeccably, and they remember the woman." Words to live by.
